2009 Bat and Glove Information for Parents
Little League International has mandated bat safety changes for
2009.
Bats: Player Ages 5-12:
Beginning in 2009, all
metal bats must be marked with a BPF rating (Bat Performance
Factor); a stamp which says BPF 1.15 If you are buying a new
metal bat, buy one with the BPF stamp on it. The BPF stamp
is easy to find, it’s usually on the barrel. Any BPF number
less than or equal to 1.15 is legal. If you
have a bat without the BPF stamp, it is illegal and cannot
be used in practices or games.
Bats: Player Ages 13-16:
New in 2009 for Junior League metal bats:
the bat barrel diameter cannot exceed 2 5/8 inches. Junior
league bats do not require the BESR stamp (or the BPF
stamp). If you are buying a bat now, we recommend you
consider purchasing one that will be legal when your son is
Senior League age (see info below). But and most
importantly, the bat must be comfortable for your son to use
now, not in 2 years.
Senior League Metal Bats: these bats do
require the BESR certification stamp, and they must adhere
to the -3 drop rule (e.g. a 30oz bat cannot exceed 33
inches), and the bat barrel diameter cannot exceed 2 5/8
inches.
If a bat is legal for use in High School, it is legal for
use in either Junior or Senior League.
Our league will continue to provide
metal bats for each team’s use
Wood bats are unaffected by the above
rule changes, remain legal to use, and do not require a BPF
or BESR stamp.
Gloves: if your child
is a pitcher, or may pitch in a game, they cannot pitch
using a glove which is white or gray. This includes
multi-color gloves: they cannot contain white or gray
colors. They also cannot wear a white or gray batting glove
under their fielding glove. If you are buying a new glove,
we recommend you avoid white/gray, and look for one that
fits your child now.
Undershirts: if your
child is a pitcher, avoid wearing long sleeve undershirts
which are white or gray to games.
